The long-unresolved disappearance of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader M. Ilias Ali has resurfaced in public discussion after more than a decade, following new developments in the investigation.
Based on information obtained during recent interrogations, sources involved in the investigation claim that the incident may have been a planned operation – although these claims have not yet been officially confirmed.
Former military officer Sheikh Mamun Khaled, currently in the custody of law enforcement, is being questioned on remand by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Although he has denied any involvement, he is reported to have provided certain information regarding the background of the incident and possible connections, which are now being verified.
Multiple investigation-related sources claim that on the night of April 17, 2012, Ilias Ali and his driver were picked up from the Banani area of Dhaka. Allegations suggest that he was later taken to a facility operated by a security agency for questioning. The same sources further claim that within a few days, he may have been killed and his body disposed of in the Dhaleshwari River. However, these claims have not yet been independently verified.
Investigators said that, based on the new information, the roles of relevant individuals are being examined and further interrogations are planned.
The disappearance of Ilias Ali has long remained a significant and controversial issue in Bangladesh’s political landscape. His family, particularly his wife Tahsina Rushdi Luna, has repeatedly demanded a clear explanation regarding the incident.
Analysts say that despite the emergence of new information, the mystery surrounding the case is likely to remain unresolved until the claims are fully verified.
