Dalia Nausheen, a veteran Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet singer, has died at the age of 71. Nausheen passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka, according to the Dhaka Post report.
She had been battling cancer for a long time and was admitted to the hospital on 27 March after her health deteriorated.
Her death was confirmed to the media by her cousin and renowned Nazrul Sangeet artist Sadiya Afrin Malik, who said Nausheen’s funeral prayers will be held after Maghrib at the Gulshan Society Mosque.
Nausheen’s body will be buried at the Banani Cemetery. She is survived by two children, one residing in the United States and the other in Spain.
Nausheen is remembered as an unforgettable name in Bangladesh’s music community. She contributed significantly during the 1971 Liberation War as a participant of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.
In recognition of her lifetime achievements in music, the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh awarded her the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2020, which is the country’s second highest civilian honour.
Various social and cultural organisations in Bangladesh have expressed deep sorrow over her death.
